When you have a newborn, please utilize the link below, choose Consular Report of Birth Abroad and Tourist Passport (1st Newborn Appointment), and follow the instructions completely.

Important Passport & Visa Info for PCSing

All military dependents, DoD civilians, and DoD civilian dependents MUST have the Italian Missione Visa BEFORE entering Italy. Military dependents and DoD Civilians must have this visa in their Special Issuance Passport (blue, no-fee for military dependents, and red/burgundy, official passport for DoD civilians and their dependents).

If your dependent is an EU citizen, they will not need the Italian Missione Visa. If your dependent is not a US citizen and not an EU citizen, they must obtain the Italian Missione Visa in their current non-US and non-EU passport.

If you arrive in Italy without the Italian Missione Visa, you MUST go back to the United States using your own money to process the no-fee and visa. Those who enter Italy without the correct documents are not covered by the SOFA Agreement and are only legally allowed to be in Italy for 90 days as a “tourist.” They then must exit Italy, obtain the visa, and reenter lawfully.

DO NOT ENTER ITALY WITHOUT THE CORRECT DOCUMENTATION

What can I do to prepare well for my PCS to Aviano?

It’s essential that once you have orders to Aviano Air Base, you and/or your dependents apply for the correct Special Issuance passport (blue, no-fee for active-duty military dependents, and burgundy, official passport for all DoD civilians and their dependents).

After receiving the Special Issuance Passport, you MUST apply for AND receive the Italian Missione Visa in the correct passport. Once you have these, you MUST enter Italy ON or AFTER the visa validity date. DO NOT arrive before the visa validity date.

You can refer to the Foreign Clearance Guide for all entry requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I get my passport photo?

There is a vendor stand in the BX, which is available periodically to take your passport photos. There are also photo shops in the local area that can provide this service. However, DO NOT use the photo booths around town. They are not the correct size.

Can I pay with cash or card for my passport?

No. You must pay with a money order, which can be obtained from the Aviano Air Base Post Office’s Finance/Outbound Mail section (unless it is for a newborn passport; there is a payment link for these in the instructions).

How much does it cost?

Can you expedite my passport?

No. We cannot expedite passports. If you need a passport for emergency travel, you can try to obtain an emergency passport from the US Consulate in Milan.

How long does it take to receive the Social Security Card?

It takes about 4-6 weeks. We mail the applications as a courtesy to the Federal Benefits Unit at the US Embassy in Rome. If you have any additional questions on the timeline or any complications during this process, please reach out to their office directly: https://it.usembassy.gov/u-s-citizen-services/fbu

Do you have any sooner appointments?

The booking link shows you our most up-to-date availability. If you need an appointment sooner for OFFICIAL TRAVEL, please contact our office.

Will you take my passport?

You get to keep your passport during the application process, and we will cancel it once your new passport arrives.
